8/21 - Babette's Feast + meditation/potluck
Monday (8/21) we’ll be hosting a special evening of meditation and dinner, followed by a screening of Babette’s Feast from 1987, which went on to be the first Danish film to win the Oscar Award for Best Foreign Language Film:
The Oscar-winning Babette’s Feast has a cinematic flavor unlike any other film. Director Gabriel Axel invites viewers to swoon over the sensual and spiritual experience of the climactic meal as if they were eating it themselves. By the end of the film, you will be convinced that food can be raised to the level of art—and that through art comes divinity. - Criterion Collection
Babette’s Feast was chosen by our own Matt:
A French refugee finds herself in a remote 19th century Danish village, cooking for the town’s pious leaders. I found this film a few years ago after discovering the composer Per Nørgård. His score only popping up briefly throughout, adds to the quiet mystery. A wonderful image of the things we share with each other, prayers and food. Fitting with this theme, our regular Monday Meditation will take place at 6:30 followed by a potluck dinner at 7 and the film at 8. All experience levels welcome! We really just sit together in silence, it’s not so hard if you’re good at doing nothing. We practice together, sharing techniques and insights. If you can’t make it to meditation, still come for dinner and a show, or just pop in for the movie.
Babette’s Feast will be playing at Working Room Monday, August 21. We will begin the night at 6:30 for meditation, followed by a potluck dinner at 7:00 and movie at 8:00. If you plan to attend for the pot luck, please share what you’re bringing here to avoid overlap. Looking forward to being together!
