7/13 - The Return
Tomorrow (7/13) we’ll be screening Russian coming-of-age movie The Return from 2003, directed by Andrey Zvyagintsev. The film tells the story of a father who suddenly returns home after a 12-year absence and takes his two sons on a fishing holiday to a remote island on a lake. The Return, Zvyagintsev’s first feature film, was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004 and won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival in 2003.
This film was selected by Meesh, who’s been in residency at the studio this month:
I haven’t yet seen The Return. I’ve been wanting to watch it for a while and I like the idea of experiencing it with everyone around me for the first time. I chose The Return because it was filmed on Lake Ladoga, Europe’s largest freshwater lake (in Russia near St. Petersburg and the Finnish border). There’s a mythical and stark quietness about a huge, cold lake surrounded by pine trees that I think will complement this perhaps eerie film well.
The Return will be playing at Working Room Thursday (tomorrow!), July 13. Doors will open at 7:30 PM and the movie will begin promptly at 8:00 PM! RSVP is not required but is always appreciated. Email (or dm on Instagram) if you need the address. Don’t forget your pillow / blanket if you want to watch from the floor! <3
