6/7 - Gozu
Tomorrow (6/7) we’ll be screening Japanese horror comedy crime film Gozu from 2003, directed by Takashi Miike and written by Sakichi Sato. The movie showcases Miike’s “unnerving, wanton and prodigious imagination.” (NY Times).
This movie was selected by Michael:
This movie has played such a significant role in my life; at 19, it opened up to me a vast world unto which prior I hadn’t felt was approachable or consumable. I hadn’t been exposed to ‘weird’ media, until one fateful day when visiting my dad he decided to just casually throw on Eraserhead for me and my 15 year old sister in the middle of the afternoon. I sat there stunned and enamored, looking over to him as he sat there completely straight faced and chill. He asked me if I liked it and gave me a DVD copy of this movie, ‘Gozu’ by Takashi Miike, and told me to watch it before I went to bed tonight. Prior to this, I thought the weirdest thing about my dad was that he wore jeans to work. And now I’m laying in his finished room over the garage (F.R.O.G.) watching the most obscure, surreal, and touchingly relatable movie I had ever seen, all in my dads bachelor pad in Myrtle Beach SC. That night, being ‘weird’ was made normal to me, I realized my dad was a freak, and that I had no choice but to follow that road he had laid the foundation for.
Gozu will be playing at Working Room tomorrow, Wednesday June 7th. Doors will open at 7:30 PM and the movie will begin promptly at 8:00 PM! RSVP is not required but is always appreciated. Email (or dm on Instagram) if you need the address. Don’t forget your pillow / blanket if you want to watch from the floor! <3
