3/12 - Ikiru
Tuesday (3/12), we’ll be screening Ikiru (1952) directed by Akira Kurosawa, loosely based on Leo Tolstoy's 1886 novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich.
Ikiru was chosen by Amanda:
I started watching Ikiru a few weeks ago on my laptop while eating dinner and doing some chores. Not even thirty minutes in, I realized that this movie deserves a bigger screen and my full attention. In Ikiru—meaning “to live”— Akashi Shimura plays a dull Tokyo bureaucrat who is mentally and spiritually checked out: he’s worked the same pointless job for 30 years, eats the same noodles every day, and lacks any meaningful relationships. It takes a terminal cancer diagnosis for the protagonist to wake up and try to learn how to live again.
I love a movie that makes us think about how to best cherish this little life we have, so I can’t wait to finish this one.
Ikiru will be playing at Working Room on Tuesday, March 12th. The doors will open at 7:00 and we’ll begin the movie promptly at 7:30. Note that this is 30 minutes earlier than our usual screenings, so plan accordingly :-)
